Incorporating feedback from the 2023 GFA/GDI Conference (June 2023), this webinar expands on initial findings of the 2022 decennial follow-up survey regarding offices of faculty affairs in US medical schools. Data related to the functions, structures, and scope of responsibility for faculty affairs and faculty development (FAFD) offices will be presented. Participants will learn about current institutional awareness and responsiveness to the evolving role of FAFD in managing contemporary needs to support faculty vitality. Participants will also engage in discussion on how current and future FAFD structures could be assessed.
Learning objectives:
- Outline core components and functions of offices of faculty affairs and development in US accredited medical schools over the past 20 years.
- Describe current leadership structures and expertise for offices of faculty affairs and development.
- Describe current resources (personnel, operational budgets) for offices of faculty affairs and development in US accredited medical schools.
- Outline anticipated challenges and opportunities for leaders of these offices over the next 5-10 years.
- Develop and discuss future survey and metrics to effectively support the evolution of the offices of faculty affairs and development.

Jennifer L. Allie, Ph.D., MPA is the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development and Associate Professor of Medical Education at the Anne Burnett Marian School of Medicine at Texas Christian University. With a 25-year career as a faculty affairs leader, Dr. Allie has demonstrated a profound dedication to advancing faculty excellence through her innovative programs to support faculty engagement and success. Dr. Allie's expertise lies in crafting comprehensive faculty policies, programs, and initiatives, with a special focus on fostering policies and programs to support faculty work-life integration. Dr. Allie's research agenda centers around the faculty career life cycle, faculty competency development, and faculty work-life integration, reflecting her ongoing passion for ensuring faculty success and fulfillment in academic medicine. She has presented her work nationally and remains committed to mentoring faculty at all career stages in regard to strategic career planning, work-life integration, and resiliency. She completed her bachelor’s degree and earned her combined PhD in higher education and leadership and MPA degree from the University of Utah.

Dr. Beatriz Tapia is currently serving as the Interim Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and holds the position of Associate Professor in the Division of Pediatrics. Since 2015, she has been the founding Assistant Dean for Faculty Development at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine in Edinburg, Texas. Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Tapia earned her M.D. from the Autonomous University of Puebla in Mexico. She also holds a Master's in Public Health from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, with a specialization in occupational health, environmental medicine, and health disparities. Additionally, she earned a Doctor of Education in Professional Leadership with an Emphasis in Health Science Education from the University of Houston.
Dr. Tapia's career is distinguished by her unwavering commitment to leadership in faculty development and faculty affairs. She has been instrumental in leading numerous faculty development series and workshops at UTRGV School of Medicine, exemplifying her dedication to cultivating faculty growth and vitality. Her pivotal role in the Texas Consortium for Faculty Success further underscores her dedication to elevating the professional development of faculty members. Dr. Tapia's multifaceted expertise continues to be a driving force in shaping the academic mission of the institution, enriching the field of healthcare education and research.
