Overview of the Final Interoperability and Information Blocking Rules - May 21

Following the enforcement discretion announcements related to the release of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology’s (ONC) 21st Century Cures Act: Interoperability, Information Blocking, and the ONC Health IT Certification Program final rule and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Interoperability and Patient Access final rule, the AAMC will present the key provisions of these regulations, requirements for providers and health systems, and updated implementation timelines. 

Topics relevant to AAMC member institutions include: 

  • standards related to information blocking; 
  • updates to the 2015 Edition certification criteria for health information systems; 
  • new Conditions of Participation (CoPs) for hospitals regarding electronic notifications;
  • and the requirement that data be accessible through application programming interfaces (APIs).
