Medical education and medical schools, as well as the other health professions, are reinventing themselves. The worlds of science, technology, and health care are evolving at lightning pace, rendering the 10-year lifecycle of a traditional one-size-fits-all medical school curriculum a relic. Our students are learning and collaborating in a fundamentally different way, with technology and a broader world of health professions education resources allowing them to pick-and-choose what and how they learn. These disruptive changes are all opportunities for us to adapt, have greater agility, better meet the needs of our students and communities, and rethink long-standing antiquated models.

The skills, resources, and team necessary for a health professions school to thrive in 2022 are very different from what got us to this point. Strengths in artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, a robust data warehouse, using electronic health record data in the curriculum, asynchronous and remote instruction, and simulation technology are all quickly becoming the core of our responses to the disruptive forces. How do we get there? This presentation will give a perspective on the resources, structure, governance, and principles that a health professions school can use in 2022 to build innovation capacity and be growth-minded. We will discuss how to engage partners and stakeholders and how to drive real change and data-driven decision-making at your schools. The goal is to enable all of us to become a continuously learning system that consistently and constantly improves apace to the changing world around us.

“MedBiquitous Community Connection” is a series of free one-hour webinars featuring health professions educators and technology innovators from around the globe. “MedBiquitous Community Connection” provides a forum for community experts to share how digital technologies are promoting improvement and better outcomes across the continuum of health professions education. A portion of each webinar will reserve time for a brief Q&A session, allowing attendees the opportunity to dialogue with guest speakers.

Marc Triola, MD, FACP

Associate Dean for Educational Informatics and Director, Institute for Innovations in Medical Education, NYU Langone Health, NYU Grossman School of Medicine

Dr. Triola is the associate dean for educational informatics and an associate professor of medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He is the founding director of the Institute for Innovations in Medical Education (IIME), a multidisciplinary team of faculty educators, education scientists, and informaticians. IIME combines education strategies with new informatics solutions to connect patient care and education at NYU Langone in a research and innovation initiative that is translational, empowers transformational change in our school, and benefits our patients. Dr. Triola’s research focuses on precision education and the use of AI tools to efficiently personalize medical education to individual learners and give new insights to their programs and coaches. His lab develops new learning technologies, AI-driven educational interventions, and works to define educationally sensitive patient and system outcomes that can be used to assess the impact of training. Dr. Triola and IIME have been funded by the NIH, the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, the Department of Education, the Department of Defense, and the American Medical Association’s Accelerating Change in Medical Education program.
