Leading the nation’s response to the novel COVID-19 pandemic has placed a significant amount of stress on our healthcare providers, researchers, administrators, and learners. Together, our community is facing challenges relating to resource shortages, unknown patient prognoses, changes to our standard curriculum delivery methods, funding and budget cuts, loss of boundaries, and the merging of our personal and professional lives; and, this has resulted in increased levels of fear and anxiety. As a leader in academic medicine, what steps can you take to ensure your teams feel safe and supported? How can attending to and supporting your own mental health have a profound impact on others?

Joan St. Onge MD, MPH
Senior Associate Dean for GME, Faculty Affairs, Professional Development, and Graduate Medical Education

Dr. Joan St. Onge is a graduate of Catholic University and Georgetown School of Medicine. After graduating from the School of Medicine, Dr. St. Onge pursued Internal Medicine residency training at Georgetown, followed by a chief residency year. She received her master’s in public health degree from the University of Miami in 2018. Her clinical focus has focused on the care of complex adult patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting, hypertension management, and women’s health.
Dr. St. Onge’s academic focus has been on medical education across the continuum. In GME, these roles include Associate Program Director of the Georgetown University Transitional Residency Program, Associate Program Director and Program Director in the Georgetown University Medicine Residency Program, and as the Program Director at George Washington University Medicine Residency Program. In undergraduate medical education, Dr. St. Onge has served as internal medicine clerkship director at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Regional Campus, and as Assistant Regional Dean for clinical curriculum. Her duties focused on the development of the integrated clerkships in medicine and in surgery on the regional campus, faculty development of the community physicians and preceptors focused on assessment, evaluation and feedback.
In GME, her efforts have focused on guiding the programs through the development of evaluation tools for milestone implementation, and development of faculty skills in assessment of the milestones. In addition, she has overseen the development of new residency programs within the institution, and with the UMMSM affiliated hospitals. Her focus on wellness includes the development of the Multispecialty Learning Communities at UM/Jackson Health System for interns to address burnout, isolation and the transition to residency. She led the development of a Wellness Committee for faculty, resident and staff. Dr. St. Onge has developed faculty and professional development programs, leadership programs for program directors and junior faculty, and has emphasized faculty wellness through policy changes, addressing equity, and developing new career development programs for faculty.
Dr. St. Onge serves as a member of the Steering Committee of the Group on Resident Affairs, and on the MSPE Task Force at the AAMC. She is the Co-Chair of the GME Working Group of the Council of Florida Medical School Deans. Since 2016, the group has advocated for changes in the health history questions, provided faculty development, collaborated on GME issues, and supported the efforts for expansion of residency and fellowship positions in the state. She is the co-chair of the Physician Workforce Advisory Council, appointed by the Florida governor and surgeon general.
Dr. St. Onge’s research interests focus on the development of new curricula in undergraduate education, the assessment of residents’ skills in internal medicine. She has developed programs that teach and reinforce the cross-specialty competencies of professionalism, communication, patient safety and quality improvement, and teaching skills for residents, as well as maintaining wellness in residency, and addressing the mental health challenges as we continue to deal with COVID pandemic. Her work in public health includes the healthcare workforce, and the importance and impact of harm reduction strategies.
Jonathan Ripp, MD, MPH
Professor of Medicine, Medical Education, and Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, and Dean for Well-being and Resilience, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS)

Jonathan Ripp, MD, MPH is Professor of Medicine, Medical Education and Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, Dean for Well-Being and Resilience and Chief Wellness Officer at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). He received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Yale University and completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine (IM) at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. In the role of chief wellness officer, Dr. Ripp oversees efforts to assess and provide direction for system- and individual-level interventions designed to improve well-being for all students, residents, fellows and faculty in the Mount Sinai Health System. He is the former Associate Dean of GME for Trainee Well-Being within the ISMMS Office of Graduate Medical Education’s in which capacity he served to help spread well-being initiatives across the training programs of the Mount Sinai Health System. Dr. Ripp also co-founded and is the former Director of the ISMMS Department of Medicine’s Advancing Idealism in Medicine (AIM) Initiative. In the Department of Medicine, Dr. Ripp serves as core faculty for the IM Residency Training Program and faculty in the Mount Sinai Visiting Doctors home-based primary care program. In addition, Dr. Ripp is the Co-founder and Co-Director of CHARM, the Collaborative for Healing and Renewal in Medicine, an international group of medical educators, academic medical center leaders, experts in burnout research and interventions, and learners all working to promote learner and trainee wellness. Recognized for his leadership in this area, Dr. Ripp has been invited to participate in the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Symposia on Physician Well-Being, join the American College of Physician's Promoting Physician Wellness Task Force and participate in the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-being and Resilience. Dr. Ripp’s primary research interest is in physician burnout and well-being, for which he has received grant support and has published and lectured widely. His multicenter studies have served to better elucidate the causes and consequences of physician burnout and have explored interventions designed to promote trainee well-being.
Chantal Young, PhD
Director of Medical Student Wellness and Clinical Psychologist
Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California
Chantal Young, PhD, is a clinical psychologist by training and had the privilege of seeing medical students in therapy before starting as director of medical student wellness at the Keck School of Medicine (KSOM). As a recovering perfectionist herself, she is passionate about helping intelligent, high-achieving people in the field of medicine discover the benefits of radical self-care in their lives. She has created several innovative initiatives to support medical students at the KSOM including "Keck Checks" (15-minute mental health screening for all first-year students), a Wellness Task Force charged with making systemic improvements to support well-being, and the required 30-hour "Foundations of Physician Resilience" curricular thread. Dr. Young also serves as Chair to the national AAMC COSA Working Group on Medical Student Well-Being. In these unprecedented times of grief and uncertainty, she is humbled to participate in this meaningful conversation with the national community.
