Transition to Residency Research Series: The Role of Geography in the Application and Interview Process - September 9

Recorded On: 09/09/2025

Geographic considerations have long been pivotal in residency selection, with applicants and programs often prioritizing each other based on location due to factors like family ties, lifestyle preferences, and regional familiarity. Prior to the 2024 application cycle, applicants had limited means to formally communicate these preferences. The introduction of the Geographic Preferences section in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) allowed applicants to select up to three U.S. Census divisions or indicate "no preference," with the option to provide an explanation for their selection(s); however, some in the community have questioned the value of geographic preferences.  This webinar explores the utility of geographic preferences and addresses common misconceptions about its role in residency selection. Data from focus groups, surveys, and the 2025 application cycle will be summarized.
