CMOG/GFP Virtual Programming: The Role of APPs in the Academic Setting - May 11

Recorded On: 05/11/2022

The number of nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) working on teams at our institutions has significantly increased over the last 10 years. The AAMC is trying to understand the evolving roles and responsibilities of this workforce and the current challenges and opportunities at academic medical centers (AMCs). During this webinar sponsored by the Chief Medical Officers’ Group (CMOG) and the Group on Faculty Practice (GFP), Amy Noecker, Principal at SullivanCotter, provided a national perspective on the current roles of PAs and NPs at AMCs. She provided insights on topics such as compensation strategies and current practices at AMCs for deploying these team members to increase access, enhance efficiency, and improve patient satisfaction. Leaders from the UAB Health System described their journey in building a program for this workforce that is centralized and structured within the practice plan. They discussed how PAs and NPs are utilized to increase access, improve patient safety and quality, and reduce provider burnout.  The AAMC is continuing to try to understand a variety of perspectives on issues related to this workforce.
