AAMC Webinar: Supporting Wellness Initiatives in Health Care and Recommendations for Promoting a Culture of Well-Being - March 23

Recorded On: 03/23/2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has stretched caregivers to perform at the very limit of their skills and training and, in many cases, led to new risks of burnout. As a result, this increased awareness has revealed new ways to address and improve clinicians’ wellbeing and the importance of empowering and advancing the role of well-being champions within our institutions.

This webinar will present survey results and recommendations from a recently-released report from the AAMC Council of Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS) Faculty Resilience Committee, The Rise of Wellness Initiatives in Health Care: Using National Survey Data to Support Effective Well-Being Champions and Wellness Programs. The report highlights common elements of wellness programming and describes the roles of the well-being champions who lead and support wellness efforts. The report also presents 10 recommendations for how medical schools and teaching hospitals can promote a culture of well-being and develop as well as support wellness leaders and initiatives.

This webinar will feature the vice chair of the CFAS Faculty Resilience Committee and co-author of the report, Jon Courand, MD, FAAP, Professor and Vice Chair Pediatrics and Assistant Dean for Wellbeing at the University of Texas Health San Antonio, who will provide a summary of the report, present the skills and characteristics critical for well-being champions to thrive, and describe the attributes necessary for sustainable wellbeing programs.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the systems-level challenges with addressing clinician well-being, why this is so critical, and what’s at stake.
  • Identify the need for alignment of institutional infrastructure and standardization to support well-being initiatives to address the broad challenge of burnout across academic health centers.
  • Describe results of a faculty well-being survey designed to understand the role and needs of well-being champions across institutions and disciplines.
